§ 1637 Exclusiveness of statutory remedy.

This rule limits how someone in Oklahoma can legally change their name. Since May 19, 1953, people can only change their name through specific legal processes spelled out in state law. You cannot just start using a different name and expect it to be recognized as your legal name.

The main way to change your name is through the court process described in other sections of this law (Sections 1631 through 1635), along with a few related laws about birth records and ID cards. Besides that court process, there are only a few other ways your name can legally change. Getting married lets you take a new name under the marriage laws. Getting divorced can let you go back to a previous name under the divorce laws. Being adopted can also change your legal name under the adoption laws.

Basically, this rule closes off any other shortcuts. If you want a new legal name and it is not through marriage, divorce, or adoption, you need to go through the official court process. This helps make sure name changes are properly recorded and cannot be done informally or through some other method not listed in the law.
