§ 1168 Commitment in sanity hearing exonerates bail.

If a defendant is found insane and committed to a mental health facility during a sanity hearing, this automatically ends any bail agreement in the case. The person who put up bail for the defendant, whether that was the defendant or someone else, does not have to worry about the bail bond anymore.

If money was deposited instead of using a bail bond, that money goes back to whoever had the legal right to handle the defendant's property. This means families or authorized representatives can get back deposited funds once the court commits the defendant for mental health treatment. The rule protects people who put up money or property for bail by making sure they are not stuck losing that money just because the defendant was found insane and sent for treatment instead of continuing through the regular criminal process.
