§ 135.315 Types of pleading

Here's what this rule means: when you're charged with a crime in Oregon, you only have two ways to formally respond to the charges in writing.

The first option is a demurrer. This is basically telling the court there's a legal problem with the charges themselves, like the paperwork was done wrong or the charge doesn't actually describe a crime. The second option is a plea, which is where you tell the court whether you're guilty or not guilty.

This rule keeps things simple. You don't get to file other kinds of written responses or motions disguised as pleadings. If you want to challenge the case against you, it has to happen through one of these two paths.
