Rule 1.4 Communication

Your lawyer has to keep you updated on what's happening with your case. If you ask a reasonable question or request information, your lawyer needs to get back to you promptly, not leave you wondering for weeks.

Your lawyer also has to explain things clearly enough that you can make good decisions about your own case. This means breaking down legal issues in a way you can actually understand, not just using confusing legal jargon. You should walk away from conversations with your lawyer knowing enough to make real choices about how your case moves forward.

If your lawyer isn't returning calls, isn't explaining your options, or is making decisions without checking with you first, that could be a violation of this rule. You have a right to stay informed and involved in your own legal matter.
