Rule 7.1 Communication Concerning a Lawyer's Services

Lawyers can't lie or mislead people when they advertise or talk about their legal services. This means everything from ads and websites to business cards and social media posts has to be honest.

A statement can be misleading even if every word in it is technically true. If a lawyer leaves out an important fact, and that missing fact makes the overall message deceptive, it still breaks this rule. For example, a lawyer can't advertise a big settlement they won in the past if they leave out details that would give a client the wrong idea about what to expect in their own case.

The point of this rule is simple: people looking for a lawyer should be able to trust what that lawyer says about themselves and their work. Clients make important decisions based on these claims, so the information has to be accurate and complete enough to not create a false impression.
