Rule 8 Joinder of Offenses and of Defendants.

This rule explains when prosecutors can combine multiple charges or multiple defendants into a single court case instead of filing separate cases.

For combining charges against one person, prosecutors can group different charges together if the crimes are similar in nature, happened during the same event, or are part of a connected series of actions or a shared plan. For example, if someone is accused of breaking into a building and then stealing property once inside, both charges could be combined into one case since they happened during the same event.

For combining multiple people into one case, prosecutors can charge two or more people together if they were involved in the same crime or same series of connected actions. This does not mean every person has to be charged with every crime listed. Some defendants might face certain charges while others face different ones, as long as everyone's actions were part of the same overall situation.

This rule matters because it affects how a case gets tried. When charges or defendants are joined together, they usually go through one trial instead of several separate trials. This can save time and resources, but it can also mean a defendant has to deal with multiple accusations or co-defendants at the same time, which may affect how the jury sees the evidence.
