Rule 1002 Requirement of Original

If you want to prove what a document, recording, or photo says or shows, you generally need to bring the actual original to court. You cannot just describe it or summarize it from memory.

There are some exceptions to this requirement, which are covered in other court rules and laws. Those exceptions allow copies or other evidence to be used in certain situations.
