Rule 610 Religious Beliefs or Opinions

A court cannot use someone's religious beliefs to make them look more or less trustworthy as a witness. It does not matter if a person is religious, not religious, or follows a particular faith. None of that can be used to suggest they are more likely to lie or tell the truth.

This protects all witnesses equally. A person who goes to church every week is not automatically seen as more honest. A person with no religious beliefs is not automatically seen as less honest. The jury must judge a witness based on other factors, not on what they do or do not believe about religion.
