Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 24 covers who can join a lawsuit that is already in progress. This same rule applies when there is an adversary proceeding in a bankruptcy case. An adversary proceeding is basically a mini-lawsuit that takes place inside a larger bankruptcy case.

Rule 24 allows two types of joining. The first is called "intervention of right," which means a person must be allowed to join if the case could affect their legal rights and no one else in the case will protect those rights.
