Rule 3.320 Manner of Challenge

Lawyers can speak their challenges to jurors out loud during jury selection instead of writing them down. This keeps the process simple and moving quickly.

There are two types of juror challenges. One is called a "for cause" challenge, which means the lawyer has a specific reason why that person should not be on the jury. The other is a "peremptory" challenge, which does not require a reason. When a lawyer uses a "for cause" challenge, they must explain their reason to the judge out loud.
