Rule 10.3 Requests and Exceptions to Charge

When a case goes to trial, each lawyer must prepare written jury instructions they want the judge to read to the jury. These are called "requests to charge." Each requested instruction must be on its own separate page, numbered in order, and the lawyer must bring two copies to give the judge at the start of the trial.

If something unexpected comes up during the trial, lawyers can submit additional requested instructions to cover the new issue. The judge may also set different rules for how and when to submit these requests before the trial begins.
