Judges have to follow the law, just like everyone else. This includes the rules laid out in the Code of Judicial Conduct, which sets standards for how judges should act both on and off the bench.

This rule is simple but important. It means a judge cannot pick and choose which laws apply to them. If a judge expects people in their courtroom to follow the law, they need to hold themselves to that same standard. When a judge breaks the law or ignores the rules meant to guide their conduct, they can face consequences just like anyone else who violates the rules that apply to them.
