§ 123 Appointment by mayor

The mayor of New York City picks the judges who serve on the Family Court in NYC's counties. Each judge appointed this way serves a 10-year term before needing to be reappointed or replaced.

This rule only applies to Family Court judges within New York City's five counties (boroughs). It does not cover how judges are selected in other parts of New York State, where different rules may apply, such as election by voters.
