Rule 52 Harmless Error and Plain Error

When a court makes a small mistake during your case, it does not automatically mean you win an appeal or get a new trial. The mistake has to be serious enough to have actually changed the outcome of your case. If the error was minor and did not hurt your case in a real way, the court will ignore it.

There is also a rule for bigger mistakes that no one caught at the time. If a serious error happened during your trial but your lawyer did not object to it, a higher court can still step in and fix it. This only happens when the mistake was obvious and affected your rights in an important way.
