§ 24-8-823 [Scrutiny of Admissions and Confessions]

When someone admits to something or confesses to a crime, the court does not simply take their word for it. Judges and juries are required to look closely at admissions and be especially careful with confessions.

A confession by itself is not enough to find someone guilty. There must be other evidence that supports the confession before a conviction is allowed. This protects people from being wrongly convicted based only on something they said, which could have been said under pressure or in error.
