When a case is ready for trial, the judge will call it from a list of pending cases. Both sides need to be ready to go when their case is called. If a lawyer or party is not ready, the judge can dismiss the case, enter a default judgment against them, or take other action.
Lawyers must show up on time and be prepared. If you have a scheduling conflict with another court, you need to let the judge know right away. Judges expect everyone to take trial dates seriously and to communicate early if there is a problem.
If both sides agree to delay the trial, they still need the judge's approval. A judge does not have to grant a delay just because both lawyers agree to one. The court controls its own schedule, and keeping cases moving is a priority.
