If a judge becomes unable to keep doing their job because of a physical or mental health problem, they can ask to retire early under state law. To do this, the judge has to file a formal request with the Louisiana Supreme Court explaining why they need to retire.

The judge must back up this request with proof. This means getting two qualified doctors to sign certificates confirming the health problem. The judge can also include other sworn statements if they think more evidence is needed to support the request.

This process gives judges a clear path to step down when health issues make it impossible to continue serving, while making sure there is real medical proof behind the decision.
