United States District Court for the Central District of California

9th Circuit Los Angeles, California

About This Court

Located in Los Angeles, the Central District of California is the most populous federal judicial district in the United States, serving a region of approximately 19 million residents across Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties. It is part of the Ninth Circuit and handles the full range of federal civil and criminal matters arising from one of the nation's largest and most economically diverse metropolitan areas.

The district is known for its significant docket of intellectual property cases, entertainment and media litigation, complex civil matters, and immigration-related proceedings, reflecting the economic and demographic character of Southern California. The court operates divisions in Los Angeles, Riverside, and Santa Ana to serve its expansive geographic territory.

With 28 authorized Article III judgeships under statute, the court has operated with a substantially larger complement of active judges through senior judge participation and temporary assignments. Its scale and caseload make it one of the busiest federal district courts in the country.

Proceedings are governed by the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure, and Federal Rules of Evidence, along with the court's local rules. Bankruptcy cases are handled by the companion Bankruptcy Court, Central District of California.

Divisions

Western Division (Los Angeles), Southern Division (Santa Ana), Eastern Division (Riverside)

Caseload
